Time Frame: Hours are generally M-F, 7:00-6:00pm (times may vary), June 11 - August 5th, 2018. There will be additional hours prior to the start of camp season to plan, prepare and train for camp.

Compensation: Dependent on experience and skills, will receive an hourly wage as compensation on a bi-weekly schedule.

Responsible To: Camp Director

General Responsibility

Camp counselors are responsible for identifying and meeting camper needs, providing guidance and leadership, and carrying out camp program activities. They will also be responsible for the general safety, supervision, development, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. Camp counselors will provide high quality, outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants.

Specific Responsibilities

§ Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper groups within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.

o Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.

o Assures campers are properly supervised at all times.

o Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during their camp stay.

o Create opportunities for positive interaction between campers.

§ Participate in the development and implementation of program activities that align with the Camp Fire mission and outcomes.

o Guide group and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.

o Monitor camper behavior and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques and redirection as needed.

o Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.

§ Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff

o Carry out assigned role regarding the administration and enforcement of camp health and safety regulations.

o Become familiar with and implement camp policies, procedures, ACA guidelines as state in the Summer Camp Staff Manual.

o Instruct campers in emergency procedures, behavior guidelines, and expectations.

o Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to day camp director

§ Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior

o Follow camp rules, regulations and policies.

o Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean up chores, sportsmanship and table manners

o Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities and the environment.

§ Represent the camp when interacting with parents and community member.

o Maintain good public relations with campers’ parents, visitors, and the community.

o Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience

Other Job Duties

§ Assist with the seasonal opening and closing of camp.

§ Help with camp maintenance and cleanup of facilitates when necessary.

§ Submit all required reports and paperwork on time, keeping accurate records on campers.

§ Assist in other camp tasks and duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Minimum Qualification

§ Must be 18 years of age or older.

§ Experience working with children preferred.

§ Have a desire and ability to work with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds.

§ Ability to accept supervision and guidance.

§ Have (or be willing to receive) First Aid and CPR certification.

§ Maintains a positive attitude in times of high stress.

§ Good character, integrity, and adaptability.

§ Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

§ Strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and program implementation.

Physical Aspects of Position

§ Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

§ Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

§ Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

§ Endurance including standing, some bending, stooping and stretching.

§ Ability to work in the sun and heat, and varying environmental conditions.

§ Ability to lift 50 pounds
